Doing anything next weekend?

News — By OAGmag on January 14, 2011 at 12:30 pm

A few gnarly ways to get your outdoor kicks with spring just around the corner

Mountain Hardwear Open 5 – Northern Dales

Where: Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria
When: 6 February 2011
How much: £25 per person

The idea behind this event is that you have five hours to visit as many points/controls as you can. Some can only be collected by bike, others by foot. The event has five entry categories: male, female, male paris, female pairs and mixed pairs. Expect varied rolling terrain with a mix of rocky and easy riding and some challenging navigation to grapple with.

The Stinger Duathlon

Where: Newnham Park, Plymouth
When: 13 February 2011
How much: £23 per person, £31 per pair

The Stinger is a 5km run through woodland, then a fast 20km ride through Newnham’s impressive off-road trails, followed by a 3km boggy, wet, stinger of a run! Hot food, refreshments and toilets are provided at the race start.

The Mighty Deerstalker

Where: The Tweed Valley and Innereighten, Peeblesshire
When: 19 March 2011
How much: £25

This is a one-day, 10km trail that will let you enjoy mud and sweat (and even the odd tears) as you climb steep hills, weave your way though thick forest, chilling rivers and take on the Deerstalker obstacles along the route. The Mighty Deerstalker is fun, fast, action-packed and tough as you can bear. It is also part of the Notorious Night Run Series, which is a collection of high-octane outdoor running events with darkness, challenging terrain and obstacles designed to keep you pushed to the limit.

Legends of Sherwood

Where: Sherwood Pines, Northamptonshire
When: 2 April 2011
How much: £35 for 10km and £25 for 5km

A night-time adventure deep within Sherwood Forest. You can choose from a 10km or 5km option to celebrate the mystery and lore of this ancient place. Sherwood’s rich history encompasses Norman kings, mediaeval monks, Robin Hood and even First World War soldiers. They have all shaped the terrain and added to the atmosphere you will encounter during this awesome night-time woodland adventure.
The race is also followed by free camping and a legendary party in the woods. Although this area is not hilly, the ground is gently undulating and you’ll experience different terrains including fravel tracks, mud, and of course, lots and lots of trees!
Expect to get wet, muddy and even a little bit scared. Legends is designed for any reasonable solo runne to complete.
