The Verdict:

What a fun kit. When I went on my first cub camp we were told to make a survival kit in a tobacco tin. I failed at the first fence as no one I knew smoked. But finally I’ve got my own (smoke free) version.

It’s sealed with tape and in a waterproof bag so when you need it you feel sure that everything will be in good order. Read the contents list - it’s amazing, there’s everything from water purification tablets to a signal mirror.

Warning – don’t open it until you need too! It’s so jam-packed with goodies that it took me about 40 minutes just to repack it!

Everything works brilliantly though - the saw cuts easily through inch-thick branches - and was still sharp afterwards. The windproof match lit first time and will help the most cack-handed fire starter on their way.

The fireball flint and striker takes practice and perseverance to use - but it does work. The Kelly Kettle tea (the best camp tea) tasted all the better for the effort.

I wish I’d been given one of these by my Grandfather when I went on my cub camp. It has most things you’ll need - and all my outdoorsy mates want to get their hands on one. Not bad for only £23.99

Aran, what brand and shape are the ‘water carriers’? Could they be used for anything else? Yours, hoping very much to NOT get a photo story of other uses, Dickie

If two of you were stranded them I’m sure you could put the carriers to another use. But if you were the last two alive then you might not want to if the survival of the human race depended upon it.
