Get the gear - Archery
Gear, Technical — By Outdoor Adventure Guide on May 1, 2012 at 12:17 pmFancy getting into archery? Here’s the lowdown on all the equipment you’ll need.
Quiver
(£5-£100)
Quiver choice is a personal thing. From basic to custom-made leather numbers, you can accessorise how you like to suit your budget and style.
Arrows
(£40-£450 for a dozen)
Aluminium arrows are cheap and ideal for beginners. Work up to carbon/aluminium arrows – more expensive and more precise.
Bow
(£10-£1000)
You can get a one-size-fits all fibreglass bow very cheaply, but if you are planning on shooting regularly you need to visit a specialised shop to be weighed, measured and partnered to your perfect bow. You can get longbows or compound bows (technical bows with camming devices that allow you longer to aim) but most people use a sports model called a recurve bow. The Kap Winstar is a popular model.
Sight
(£5-£300)
Be aware that the less expensive the sight, the less sturdy, accurate and easy to adjust it will be. Sights that move or shear off are frustrating. You’ll pay up to £300 for a fancy one.
Target
(£20-£500)
Cheap leisure foam targets are designed for use with a beginner bow. Targets that stop more high-powered bows are pricier.
and once you’ve got the archery gear, here’s how to use it…
