Have-a-go Events 2012
News — By Outdoor Adventure Guide on April 24, 2012 at 2:54 pmFancy giving yourself a challenge next weekend? Here are our have-a-go challenges for June 2012.
Tweedlove Bike Festival
Where: Tweed Valley, Scotland
When: 26th May – 5 June
How Much: Varies
Nope, not a celebration of our favourite shooting jackets, but in fact a 10-day cycling-fest in the Tweed Valley. Events include the Skinny Tweed, a free 44-mile guided tour of the valley, and Hawaii Tweed a night ride and downhill slalom. For the competitive amongst you, there’s the King & Queen of the hill event, an all-mountain hill event on the trails round Glentress.
Snowdon Night Hike
Where: Snowdon, Wales
When: 9th June
How much: £50 plus £300 sponsorship
Snowdon’s long been a popular choice with hikers, but not too many people attempt the ascent in the dark. The event starts at 11pm at the foot at the mountain, ready for a dawn descent. The price covers professional guides, as well as a much needed bacon roll and cuppa at the finish.
WaterAid
Where: Nationwide (mountain dependent)
When: June 16
How Much: Free to enter
Gather a willing team, choose a mountain, climb said mountain and in turn raise money for charity. Water Aid want to get four people on the peak of every mountain in the UK between 11am and 3pm on the same day to raise £200,000 to bring clean water to Nepal. Each team is asked to raise £400 to take part in this big-scale event.
Looking for something more gnarly? Or need to keep the kids entertained? Or just pop to Scotland for a cup of Grower’s coffee.
Karrimor Great Trail Challenge
Where: Keswick, Cumbria
When: 17th June
How Much; From £25
A brand spanking new trail event through the Lake District. Choose from a 10km, a half marathon and or a whole 26 miles. The longer events involves climbs of nearly 400m, encompassing the old Keswick rail track, Latrigg Fell and a stretch of the Cumbria Way.
Weymouth Bay Swim
Where: Weymouth, Dorset
When: 17th June
How Much: £20
Break free from the indoor pool and challenge yourself in this mile long, bracing sea swim along the water’s edge. A great way to raise money for the British Heart Foundation while practising your breaststroke.
Ride it! The Peaks
Where: New Mills, Derbyshire
When: 23 June
How Much: from £7.50
A day of massive climbs, technical challenges and whooping descents. There are two routes, a 15 mile or 25 miles, starting with a 700 metre climb, and encompassing the legendary Jacob’s Ladder (weather dependent). Testing and tough, but definitely grin-inducing.
