Ice Climbing in La Plagne
News — By Admin on February 1, 2012 at 3:12 pmFebruary in La Plagne – hard to think of anything but snow, skiing and Vin Chaud. But this weekend its all about crampons and ice towers as the Ice Climbing World Cup hits the ski resort of La Plagne.
Following comps in South Korea and Switzerland, the best Ice Climbers in the world will descend (well, technically speaking, ascend) upon France for the third event in the Ice Climbing World Cup on the 3-4 February 2012.
The crampon-wielding athletes will scale the 24-metre high ice tower in two event; “difficulty” and “speed.” In the difficult event, the competitors climb as high as possible in the given speed limit, while in the speed comp times competitors to climb a 16m high route. Typically they shoot their way up the frosty tower in just 12 seconds.
Impressed? You can always swap skis for crampons next time you hit La Plagne. Or you can always catch a demo event at Sochi 2014…
