OAG issue #94 dropping this week…
Issues, News — By OAGmag on August 15, 2011 at 9:32 amThe next issue of the Outdoor Adventure Guide will be hitting the news stand later this week – here’s a sneak preview from the OAG’s editor, Tracey Radnall, of what to expect in the latest issue of the UK’s favourite outdoor magazine.
There’s a new craze sweeping Britain…
Running barefoot, with your shoes on! We’ve got an interview with one of its leading exponents on page 26 – it could be the answer to all sorts of knee aches and pains. And if you’re a runner you’ll love the story about Conny Zamernik, who ran 104 miles along a deserted Patagonian railroad in winds up to 100km per hour (p30).
City limits
But if that all sounds a little too remote, find out what it’s like to walk a circle around our capital city and pitch up in other people’s gardens (p48)… a great way to save cash if you’ve got a ticket for next year’s Olympics.
Other UK-based adventures this month include learning to ‘pop’ on a surfboard without falling off (p40), paddling the River Spey in a day (p56) and snorkelling, yes snorkelling (p69). If you’re a dyed-in-the-wool landlubber, how about cycling Devon’s coast to coast (p62)? I had a great time, chasing up hills and down tight little country lanes, through tunnels and hauling my bike over rocky detours… until my chain snapped 12 miles from Plymouth. Huge thanks to a complete stranger (Martin) who stopped to straighten my chain with a pair of pliers. Inspired by the experience, we’ve got advice on mending a bike chain on the trail (p84).
Further afield
For those with a head for heights and a lust for mountain adventure, there’s always ice climbing. We asked OAG contributor Will Robson to visit the ice climbing centre at Saas Fee, Switzerland, where he had a go at using crampons and ice screws. But if you’re planning some late summer outdoor adventures in Switzerland, don’t miss the hiking and cycling in Adelboden (p36). Just don’t bend over when there are maternal nanny goats around…
